Artist Statement

I am currently working on two projects simultaneously; The Serpent Tree and Ancient Expanse, the continuation a site-specific installation I made and photographed in Denmark as a Resident Artist at the International Ceramic Research Center.

The Serpent Tree explores fragility and femininity and its relation to eternity through ceramics, connecting my artwork made in a post-modern context to the rich and ancient history of clay. Drawing inspiration from nature as well as art history, this series of sculptures connects my current life with a visual history from the past. The inspiration for this work comes from the story of the Garden of Eden and investigates the frailty of the body and the fallibility of man. Referencing nature as well as the body, these sculptures are about birth, growth and temptation.

Ancient Expanse was photographed in natural site, at the beach in the Danish town where I was living. These pieces are a reaction to my new environment and are a reflection of the coastline along the southwestern coast of Zealand. These pieces explore the boundaries between the real and un-real, natural and man-made, and time and space. The photographs document a fleeting moment in time where the natural and unnatural meet and interact and serve as a metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life.
